Tales of Wildfires, Turkey Day, Christmas, this and that......

It has been some time since my last post.....where does the time go? This is such a busy time for everyone. The hustle and bustle of holiday preparation is in the air!

Do you all have your Thanksgiving plans made? Ours will be a non-traditional day since our "children", (they are 25 and 21, dare I call them children?!) will not be at home, DH and I are traveling to Visalia, CA to enjoy some time with extended family. Hope you all enjoy the feast, the memories old and new, family, friends and the blessings in your lives! We are feeling especially thankful this year. If you have watched the news in the last week, you may have heard about the wildfires here in So CA. The Anaheim Hills fire came very close to our home......scary and extremely unsettling as we were under a mandatory evacuation. Much prayer and the hard work of the capable firefighters kept the flames away. We are most fortunate as many did lose their homes and all that they held. Please add those folks to your prayers.....such a tragedy to deal with at any moment but at holiday time it seems even more devastating. We are humbly
thankful that we were spared the heartache!
Have you begun your Christmas shopping yet? Oh my, hitting the malls is not my favorite part of Christmas so I have done much internet shopping. The boutiques at Make Mine Pink are full of wonderful gifts, holiday decor and other wonderful items and you can shop from home instead of battling the mall crowds.....and no gas will be consumed!! One of the MMP members even has a wonderful Christmas blog....visit, it is sure to bring the holiday spirit to your heart! Here's the link to visit Becca at ...of Bluebirds & Roses & Christmas. Enjoy!!

Everything is "Coming Up Roses" for Pink Friday Shopping!!

Please join us Friday October 24th for "Coming Up Roses"
I’ve never seen a rose I didn’t love. From the first blossom of spring, gently swaying in the breeze, to an intricately stitched needlepoint, rich in history, I love them all.
Roses represent so many wonderful things and are often used to celebrate special milestones such as weddings, births and anniversaries. Roses have also been used throughout the centuries in estate and cottage gardens, home décor and fashion. Milliners used silk roses to embellish the finest hats, while seamstresses stitches the richest brocade drapes adorned with roses.
Throughout the years, famous artists have studied and painted every aspect of the rose. Antique lithographs and post cards from the 1800s grace our homes today with their everlasting beauty while roses continue to gracefully fit every lifestyle and décor.
If you have a soft spot for roses, won’t you please join us for PINK FRIDAY at Make Mine Pink on Friday October 24th. The boutiques at Make Mine Pink are pleased to present “Coming up Roses.”

How are You Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness?

Pink October is all around us!! As a breast cancer survivor, I KNOW how important it is to learn all you can about detection and treatment and how essential it is that a cure be found, soon! Here are a few suggestions of places to give that needed support:

*Look for products in your grocery stores....many have special PINK packaging and their producers will donate on your behalf to support research!

*PINK is all over the internet giving many opportunities to donate and valuable information that might save a life....read, learn and donate! Visit The Breast Cancer Site....click daily to give free mammograms to those who cannot afford one!

*PINK is on the airwaves! Television and radio are promoting the cause...listen and donate!

*PINK is all over the Make Mine Pink boutiques! Register for the Shop Hop, hunt for the PINK ribbons, enter to win wonderful prizes, shop at the MMP boutiques for PINK products! Many boutique owners have special limited edition PINK October products, offer discounted prices, or free shipping! Grandma G's and many others will donate a portion of all PINK October sales to Susan G. Komen Foundation! Get shopping!!

* The Susan G. Komen Foundation website has extensive information on preventive measures, research, fund-raising, and of course, will accept donations year round!

Remember, EVERY dollar counts! Each year brings us a little closer to learning how to prevent this terrible disease......let's make a difference by supporting the needed research!

Exciting Event!!

Please join Grandma G's and Make Mine Pink for PINK OCTOBER SHOP HOP!

When? Monday October 6-12th. Winners will be announced the week of the 12th.

You can register now or wait until you've found one of the pink ribbons. Registration is necessary to get credit for each of the pink ribbons you find.

Each year, Make Mine Pink celebrates all who have suffered and survived breast cancer and honors those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. Grandma G's and the other boutiques at Make Mine Pink have lots of exciting things planned including special limited edition products, special discounts, or a percentage of sales donated directly to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. As a 20 year survivor of breast cancer I am proud to donate 15% of sales from Grandma G's Pink October Category through the month of October!!

Please register and read the instructions to participate. Not only will you have an opportunity to win fabulous prizes, but you'll have an opportunity to shop for unique and specialty products and participate in specials and events at some of the individual boutiques. The shop hop is open to anyone that would like to participate over 18 years of age (limit one registration per physical address).

How it Works

Many of our MMP members—click here to see the complete list—have hidden a special pink ribbon (as shown to the right) on their websites. There is only one pink ribbon image per website. Search through their websites until you find the pink ribbon that says, "You Found It!" Once you've found the ribbon, click it to return to Make Mine Pink, and, as a registered participant, you will automatically receive credit for it—the more ribbons that you find, the better the prizes will get. When the Shop Hop ends, we will hold a drawing for each prize level. Signing up is free and there's no purchase necessary to participate, so there's no reason not to play!

We also encourage you to look around the members' websites while searching for the pink ribbon, and if you find something you just can't live without, bookmark the page so you can return. You won't want to miss out on special events being held on many of the individual sites!

Make Mine Pink has created a team at Susan G. Komen for the Cure® "Passionately Pink." You may visit it and make a donation directly. Together we all can make a difference.

Things to Look Forward to at Grandma G's!!

Autumn is my favorite time of year! After several 90 degree + days here in So California it now looks and feels like autumn is finally here.....of course, tomorrow could be looking and feeling summer-like again.....it's California after all!!

As the year winds down toward 2009, we will all too quickly run through Halloween, Thanksgiving and then Christmas.....why does it all have to go at breakneck speed? Anyway, before the time gets away from me I thought I'd share some upcoming fun stuff at Grandma G's!
Very soon, a new category......or, actually, a change to an existing one is coming!! Yard Sale will soon present products at unbelievably low prices.....some as low as $1.00 and none more than $10.00!! Still excellent, useful, items in good condition but it is Yard Sale season and we are cleaning off the shelves!!

My wonderful BigBottomBags will be leaving.....the ones listed are the last that will be available....boo hoo! The wonderful seamstress and designer of these great bags, Lynne Park, is now selling her bags in a B&M store! Good for you, Lynne and best of luck!! So, if you want one, you'd better get it soon!!

I have already shared that I have a new Guest Artist, Suzanne Maust, but I also want to share a lovely photo of her and, in her words, share a little about the lady who makes such pretty treasures!! So, introducing, Suzanne!!

"Suzanne Maust, a mother and grandmother of two lives with her husband in Northern California. Among many hobbies Suzanne has a passion for beautiful vintage linens with European cutwork, embroidery, tatting, crocheting and the like.
Having inherited from her grandmother and mother an interest and talent for sewing and design, she was eager to preserve family memories by sewing usable items that were made from her own ancestors’ linen closets. These dresser scarves, hankies, tablecloths and bedding pieces had been hidden in chests and closets for too long. Suzanne began creating items for her nieces, siblings, children and grandchildren incorporating beautiful family linens she had received from several generations of mothers.

Although she specializes in lovely Tea/Coffee cozies that keep beverages fresh and hot, she also creates elegant lingerie bags, jewelry pouches, infant skirts, personalized infant blankets and adorable totes incorporating these beautiful antique fabrics.

Suzanne also loves to create custom items using pieces of your own vintage linens or chosen fabric." (This is such a wonderful idea....perhaps you have a special family heirloom that you'd like made into a cozy for another family member or a beautiful lingerie bag for a new bride....the possibilities are limitless!!)

Beginning October 6-12th, the boutiques at Make Mine Pink will host Pink October Shop Hop!! Details will be announced soon so watch my blog, website and newsletter! This is an event you won't want to miss.....lovely PINK items for you in each boutique and donations to breast cancer research, too!!

Please visit Grandma G's often and watch as we change into our fall dress! Don't miss out on this Friday's MMP Pink Friday Shopping with a Twist when we present "Office Chic"!! COME TO HARVEST HOME.....SHOPPING WITH A TWIST!!

On Friday, September 12th join Grandma G and the boutiques at Make Mine Pink for this week's Pink Friday themed shopping with a twist!!

When I think of a Harvest Home it conjures up many memories of my favorite time of year. Memories of cinnamon potpourri simmering on the stove, homemade apple pies in the oven from apples hand-picked at our local orchard and memories of family and friends gathered around the fire sipping hot spiced cider and making plans for the upcoming Holiday season.
A glance out the window, framed like a fine painting, reveals the tree lined streets ablaze with colors so rich and vibrant that it beckons you out of the cozy warmth of your home to explore and experience every nuance of the season. The crisp fall air surrounds and teases you with the a waft of smoke from a neighboring chimney. It becomes a game, guessing the type of wood burning, each with their own distinct fragrance.
Every color and scent of the season brings a flood of old memories and begins painting new.
You quicken your step to get home. Home to the cozy and inviting warmth of the fire softly glowing in the hearth of your Harvest Home..... Joyce Lucas.

Go to Make Mine Pink to see the list of participating boutiques and don't forget to shop at Grandma G's for fun fall decor!! Get there early so you don't miss out on a special treasure!

Today is a day of memories.....

August 13th, 1923 was my dad's birthday. He was born in Indiana, as I was and his name was George Clayton Mallory.....I was named after him and in high school friends even called me George! Dad was a wonderful man, the first man I ever loved. He and I had a special, father-daughter relationship.......he loved me as much as I loved him even though he had a difficult time showing it sometimes! He always called me princess....a nickname I hate now almost as much as I did long ago! My sweet daddy went to be with the Lord on August 24, 1999......I really miss you Dad, and Happy Birthday!

August 13th, 1952, Dad's 29th birthday, was the birthday of my youngest brother, Geoffrey Ellis Mallory. When my Dad came home from the hospital to tell me I had another brother (already had one, Breck) I told him to take him back.....I didn't need two brothers, I needed a sister! Ohhhh, Geoff, I am so glad he didn't listen to me.....you were truly a blessing in my life. Geoff had golden orange hair (red, but we had to give it a fancy name!) and great big blue eyes.....I loved the freckles that covered his face when he was young. He was as fine a man as there could be.....son, husband, wonderful uncle, loyal friend and the best brother Breck and I could have asked for. He, too, left us on March 31, 2001, to be in heaven with Mom and Dad. I have a humongous hole in my heart that I am sure will never heal.....Geoff, I love you and you are missed every day, Happy Birthday, Brother....

I spent part of my evening on Sunday designing my own postage stamp!! SHOW AND TELL MONDAY!!

This is a different sort of Show and Tell.....I will show and tell a little about another side of my life! For the past nearly 15 years, I have been a volunteer docent at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, CA.

I hold a position within our guild as chairman of the Special Events committee. Special Events are those where there is a guest speaker, often there to lecture on a newly published book and then a book signing afterward. People such as Henry Kissinger, Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, Charlton Heston. Bob Hope, etc., etc, etc.....I could list hundreds!!

My Show and Tell involves a three day event this week called Ping Pong Diplomacy: The Rematch. Billed as a prologue to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing it is an historic sequel to the 1971 & 1972 table tennis events between the US and Chinese National Table Tennis Teams that became know as Ping Pong Diplomacy. There will be champs from both countries taking part in a series of table tennis exhibitions that will be held in the Nixon Library's spectacular replica of the White House East Room.

So far, I have spent approximately 20 hours on planning, recruiting docents to work, assigning duties, phone calls, emails and attending briefing meetings and the event doesn't start until tomorrow!! Total hours for the 3 days of events.....20 more!! This is a time consuming, exasperating, fun, enjoyable, hard-working job that I often complain about but absolutely love doing!!

Please do notice the pen I am using.....PINK, from Make Mine Pink......my other love is never far away!!

I still have work to do so better get at it. Enjoy your week, I will and then I will fall on the sofa for a rest this weekend! Hope you have enjoyed seeing another side of my life!
